Strong disk and file encryption
VeraCrypt is a free, open-source encryption tool that protects your files with strong, well-reviewed encryption. It is the successor to the discontinued TrueCrypt project and is widely recommended by security experts.
You can create an encrypted container — a single file that mounts as a virtual drive when you enter the password — or encrypt an entire USB stick, external drive or even your Windows system partition. Files are encrypted and decrypted automatically as you use them. Advanced options include hidden volumes for plausible deniability, keyfiles and a choice of encryption algorithms.
The interface is functional but technical, and full-disk encryption requires care and a rescue disk. If you lose your password, the data cannot be recovered. For protecting sensitive documents or portable drives, VeraCrypt is one of the most trusted free options available.
